Coin Quest 2: Slot Overview

They say the squeaky wheel gets the grease, and nowhere is that saying more apt than in relation to software provider Slotmill. The studio has shown an impressive willingness to enact player feedback in the past and has done so once again. The result of this studio/player symbiosis is Coin Quest 2, which in Slotmill words is 'a sequel to our most popular game to date.' Coin Quest 2 features a number of enhancements, but fans of Coin Quest should be happy to note the core gaming remains the same and was, if anything, better than ever to test drive.

The first update is visual. Coin Quest 2 is located in a more open part of the jungly setting than the first, displaying an attractive set of step pyramids, flora, and stone blocks. The expanded vista reflects an expansion of the game as a whole and made an encouraging first impression. Other changes include a less twisty, turny-looking collect meter and a larger game grid. This one utilises 6 reels holding 6 symbols each, turning out a win when five or more matching symbols land adjacent to one another in vertical or horizontal directions. So far, so good.

In the spirit of bigger is better, Coin Quest 2 has a slightly higher default RTP than its predecessor, coming in at 96.18% when playing in the regular mode. That means picking a stake of 20 p/c to $/€50 per spin and bashing away at the play button. Alternatively, where available, Coin Quest 2 comes with a bunch of bonus buys, detailed below. Volatility remains high, available for play on desktop computers, tablets, and mobile devices.

Up next are symbols, which are fairly similar to what we had before. This means four-part Aztec, four-part card suit looking low pays, and four skull symbols as the premiums. Values-wise, a five-of-a-kind hit is worth 0.25 to 1 times the bet, rising to 9 to 75 times the bet for a cluster of 16+. When wins do occur, they are removed from the reels, and a wild symbol is placed in the empty spaces before other symbols drop down to fill the rest of the gaps. If a new win is created after the drop, another avalanche sequence will be triggered. Wilds substitute for any of the pay symbols.

Coin Quest 2: Slot Features

When symbols are removed from the board by the avalanche feature, they are also hoovered up by the collect meter - both in the base and bonus game. Each symbol is worth 1 step. When the meter reaches 25, both coin symbols and wilds are added to the grid; then, the meter is reduced by 25. If the meter reaches 50, it overcharges, awarding extra wilds and coins than normal, then is reduced by 50.

Coin Cluster

Coin symbols land with values of 1x to 500x the bet. When coin symbols make a cluster of five or more, their values are added together and awarded. After the coin payout, the coins in the cluster merge into one coin displaying the total value before other symbols avalanche in.

Power Up Symbols

Present in the main game and bonus game are Power Up symbols, triggering these abilities when they land:

  • Meter Charge – adds 5, 10, or 20 steps to the collect meter, then turns into a wild.
  • Wild Mask – adds wild symbols to the grid, then turns itself wild.
  • Coin Mask – adds coin symbols to the reels, then turns wild.
  • Transform Mask – converts one random symbol type in view into another symbol, then turns wild.
  • Super Mask – activates when there are no more wins by adding Coins to the reels. It collects all Coin values and displays a multiplier, which is applied to the total amount, and then awarded. Once paid, it turns into a coin with the collected value.

Free Spins

Landing 3 scatter symbols awards 8 free spins with a progressive win multiplier. Each time the collect meter is filled, the multiplier increases by +1, as well as adding coins and wilds to the grid at random. Neither the collect meter nor the multiplier resets during the round. Landing the +1 spin awards an additional free spin, and landing the Super Free Spins scatter symbol awards +4 more free spins while upgrading the round to Super Free Spins.

Super Free Spins

This is triggered from the base game when 2 regular scatter symbols and 1 Super scatter symbol land. A total of 8 free spins are awarded. The difference in this round is that coin symbols accumulate at the bottom of the grid for the duration of the feature.

Fast Track

The Fast Track menu offers direct access to certain features available from the base game for applicable players. These are:

  • Gamble – 140x for a special round which may or may not trigger one of the free spins features.
  • Super Bonus – 500x the bet.
  • Bonus – 100x the bet.
  • 2+ Power Up – a game round with 2+ Power Up symbols for 40x the bet.
  • 1+ Power up – a game round with 1+ Power Up symbol for 5 the bet.

Burst Mode

Finally, Burst Mode is a sort of autoplay option where players pick a number of spins using only the game engine without the front-end graphics, so to speak. It can be stopped at any time once set in motion.

Coin Quest 2: Slot Verdict

You have to hand it to Slotmill; this is one studio that's not only open to player feedback but is willing to implement it in future games. We previously saw this with Fruit Smash morphing into Super Fruit Smash, and now in Coin Quest 2. Have to say, the update is a doozy. Coin Quest was a fun cluster-paying grid slot in its own right, yet its follow-up is even sharper. The original's gameplay has been streamlined and stretched at the same time to produce an overall denser experience. Suffice it to say, if you like Coin Quest 1, you might want to be putting Coin Quest 2 on the to-do list, stat.

So what works better? Pretty much everything, really. The sequel isn't a monstrous revolution over Coin Quest as such, though this has a lot to do with the already decent quality of the first game. However, Coin Quest 2 benefits from things like nicer artwork, sweet transitions from base to bonus game, a bigger grid, refined features, and an all-around fuller time to be had. The icing on top is bigger potential, too, practically mandatory in a sequel, where Coin Quest 2 tips the scales at 15,000x the bet at the most. The tools players have at their disposal for attempting to crack that figure are well-designed, and there are loads of them. If you like a busy grid slot, this is one to check. Really, Slotmill has chucked in practically everything but the sink in the form of things like symbol transformations, symbol collects, coin wins, free spins, and a bevvy of buy options, amongst others. Despite the long list of extras, there was never any feeling of getting bogged down with all of those moving parts; the gameplay instead had a nice flow to it.

So yeah, Coin Quest 2 was a commendable step up from what was already a highly entertaining slot. It's hard to pick any major faults, really. However, gamblers can be a fickle bunch at times, so if Slotmill ends up creating a Coin Quest 3 off the back of player feedback, it should be quite a sight.

Superb

Coin Quest 2 is undoubtedly a satisfying step up from what was already a solid cluster-paying grid slot.
